I wanted to post this here after spending some time Saturday being truly moved by something going on more or less locally. Former Skins lineman Derrick Dockery holds three events annually to support youngsters who have lost a parent of sibling to military service. The party he threw for these kids Saturday on The National Mall in DC – which included a host of former and current Skins – was both joyous and heartbreaking, the chance to interact with 600 kids who are coping with this devastation.
His charity, Yellow Ribbons United, is constantly seeking ways to help these families and, considering this annual event on Memorial Day (Playfields In The Park) is so close to Baltimore (his annual back-to-school and Christmas events are held in the DMV as well), I wanted to let anyone interested in sponsoring or volunteering know how to get involved.
My family and I will certainly be taking part in future events the Dockerys hold, and seeing big smiles on those little faces that have already been through so much is certainly something I will carry with me a long time.
