We were lucky enough to spend about a half hour this afternoon with Buck Showalter before he left for the ballpark in Seattle, and while we will post the entire interview as part of next week’s podcast, we wanted to share some snippets with everyone now on some of the more timely elements.
Buck was very high on Dylan Bundy – as expected – and I came away with the distinct opinion that the rookie will be starting in the next month or so. I could be reading it wrong, but the way Buck spoke at length about their plan for the kid and the fact that innings counts can possibly jump up sigificantkly from year to year (and not just arbitrarily 30 innings up a year) – well, I think the future is now with this kid. Also, check out Buck alluding to whether it’s time to let Bundy throw all of his pitches. Very interesting.
Buck made it very clear that Manny’s base-running blunders, while not an issue of effort, are unacceptable and he’s being talked to quite a bit. I pushed Buck on whether he believes this is finally out of Manny’s system.
Also, he provided an update on Darren O’Day’s recovery – listen in for details – and Buck detailed the problems with trying to land a veteran lefty/lefty reliever in trade, which is something I’ve been harping on the need to do since April. Bucks seems to think we need to develop that specialist from within.
Anyway, we have a lot more great content from the skipper we’ll include in the next podcast, but in the meantime here is the very latest news with the O’s straight from the man himself.
